What Is the Dental Restoration Process for Implants?

dental restoration Boca Raton, FL

Dental restoration, also called restorative dentistry, seeks to improve oral health, appearance, and function. One common service provided with dental restoration are dental implants, which can replace a single missing tooth, a section of missing teeth, or an entire row.

Dental restoration with dental implants

Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone above or below a missing tooth. They serve as the anchor for replacement teeth, and they are often the preferred dental restoration solution for missing teeth. The following is a general four-step process for dental implants treatment.

The planning stages

You can begin the implants process by scheduling an initial consultation with a general dentist that offers treatment. This is an important visit that allows the patient and the dentist to discuss treatment goals and all available dental restoration options. The dentist will also conduct an oral examination and may order dental X-rays to determine if any preparation procedures are needed for implant placement. The consultation visit is also an opportunity for patients to ask any questions about the treatment process.

Preparing for implant placement

If the patient decides that implants are the most appropriate dental restoration, then they can begin mouth preparations for the implant placement. It is important to have enough healthy bone in the jaw to support the implant long-term.  A bone grafting procedure is often recommended for patients who have experienced bone loss inside of the jaw as a result of tooth loss. Other preparations may include treatment for periodontal disease to further ensure proper support for the implant and the replacement teeth.

The placement procedures

Once the mouth is ready, scheduling for the implant placement can happen. The dentist may be able to perform the placement, or they may outsource the procedure to an oral surgeon. The placement involves accessing the jawbone, drilling a tiny hole, and placing the dental implant. The mouth needs several months to properly heal and for the implant to fuse together with the jawbone. After the mouth heals, then the abutment of the implant and the replacement teeth are placed. A crown, bridge, or denture is placed to serve as the dental restoration.

Follow-up visits and aftercare

After the dental restoration is attached to the implant, the patient will need to get used to their new teeth, and the dentist will likely require regular follow-up visits to ensure there are no concerns. The patient can care for their new teeth the same as they would natural teeth. This should include brushing the teeth and gums several times a day, using floss at least once per day, and utilizing mouthwash in a healthy manner.
