Invisalign® vs. Braces: Choosing an Option

Invisalign Boca Raton, FL

If you are displeased with your teeth’s alignment, you can opt for teeth straightening treatments like Invisalign® or braces. Since both options are popular and highly effective, choosing between the two is not always easy. This article compares the two options and provides relevant information that may guide your decision.

Traditional braces and Invisalign®

Braces are the regular and oldest teeth straightening method, comprising metal brackets and wires connected to both jaw arches with a dental-grade adhesive. The device applies pressure with the wires running through each bracket. Every month or two, the dentist will tighten the wires to move the teeth into the proper and desired position.

Invisalign, on the other hand, employs a set of clear, plastic aligner trays that are replaced every two weeks. Each aligner is slightly different from the last one in the series, gradually shifting the teeth to their final position, planned from the beginning of the treatment by the dental professional.

Choosing between the two

Deciding the best treatment choice between Invisalign and braces for a smile can be difficult when looking at the various types of braces available. Gone are the days of metal-only braces with elastic bands. What is best for a patient depends on different factors, including their current dental health and how much change is needed to achieve the desired result.

The first major difference to consider is the invisibility factor. For patients who want to straighten their teeth but are not ready to have metal brackets affixed to their teeth for several months, metal braces might not be the best choice. Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible and hard to notice on the teeth.

Another major factor in the braces vs. Invisalign debate is the extent of change required. Minor misalignment and crowding issues can be solved easily by both options. More involved dental issues affecting the jaw and surrounding structures are harder to correct with Invisalign. Due to the structure and removability of clear aligners, additional attachments might be required to correct issues like a crossbite, an underbite or an overbite. Often, the dentist will simply recommend getting braces as the most effective option.

Another aspect to consider is the willingness to use the aligners. The ability to take off the aligners briefly is a luxury that should not be taken for granted because it could mean longer treatment duration. The aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours per day; if that seems like a hassle, it is better to opt for traditional braces.

Teenagers are more prone to slack on the wear time. Therefore, age could be a determining factor. Invisalign for teens comes with a compliance indicator that helps parents and dentists monitor how often the teen is wearing the aligner trays.

In summary

Both braces and Invisalign are highly effective for helping to achieve a beautiful and straight smile. Fortunately, you do not have to make a choice all by yourself. The dentist guides you and provides the support that you need to choose the most suitable option.
